Projects in play top $3b for Central Highlands

A new childcare centre and an allied health facility are among close to 30 major development projects in play for the Central Highlands. The Central Highlands Development Corporation (CHDC) has released its Major Projects 2022-2023 snapshot, which captures key development that is recently completed, in progress or in the pipeline. "The total investment value sits at more than $3 billion and that's indicative of strong confidence from investors and government in a growing region," CHDC interim chief executive officer Peter Dowling said. "Many project costs are not publicly available due to privacy and confidential commercial arrangements so it's fair to say the true value would be significantly higher." Mining projects dominate the major works still in the pipeline including the Gregory Crinum M-Blockextension, Kestrel West mine extension, and Ensham extension as well as new coal developmentsValeria, Wilton-Fairhill, and Blackwater South coking coal project. Among the projects listed as current is the 92-place First 5 Years Early Childhood Education Centre in Emerald. Construction is on track to start this month and the $5 million centre is expected to open in March or April next year, weather and building supplies permitting. An allied health facility at the GP Super Clinic in Emerald is also listed in the snapshot. The $2.8 million project is expected to be included in next month's updated Federal Budget. "This will enable us to deliver more patient services and training locally," Central Highlands Healthcare Board chair Paul Bell said. "The patient services will span across the spectrum - from speech therapy to mental health support - reducing the need for Highlanders to travel for care. "Growing our health infrastructure strengthens the Central Highlands' liveability for all ages, and that helps to sustain and grow our population." Mr Dowling said the snapshot came at a transformative time for the region. "CHDC's Resources and Innovation Forum is one of a string of events in recent weeks that have given the Central Highlands extreme exposure to key decision-makers and influencers," he said. "The huge level of interest and participation from local business and industry made it patently clear that we're actively striving to adapt to, and keep pace with, global economic change and opportunity.
