Mullets, skullets and undercuts have cropped up all over the MMG Dugald River operation thanks to the mine’s social club and enthusiasm for a good cause.

More than 90 workers, including general manager Tim Akroyd, have submitted to the clippers in the past fortnight for the Black Dog Institute’s Mullets for Mental Health campaign.

The Dugald River Social Club has run two mullet cut-in nights across two roster crews at the North-West Queensland mine to support the cause.

As well as raising awareness, the initiative has raised more than $22,000 to date.

Club secretary Molly Stanistreet said the slogan behind the mullet campaign was ‘We’re all ears for Black Dog Institute’s Mullets for Mental Health’, playing on the way the hairstyle exposes people’s ears.

“The idea is to be a visual example of that person that someone can turn to, to show that they are all ears to listen to anyone’s mental health concerns,” she said.

“We jumped on board and started a team through the Dugald River Social Club.

“We are a not for-profit-organisation. Basically our role here on site is to promote social events, fundraisers, and anything that we can do to reduce the mental stress associated with FIFO life.”

The club has donated money to the Black Dog Institute for each person who stepped up for the chop – and that included some full-on makeovers such as skullets (a full head shave with just a section of hair remaining at the back).

“The feedback on site and from management and from family and friends at home has just been so resoundingly positive,” Ms Stanistreet said.

“It’s just been an amazing event. We didn’t quite expect it to be as positive as it has been. I thought there’d be some unhappy partners at home (after seeing some participants’ radical new looks), but for the most part it’s been really, really positive.”
