A man killed in a crash between a haul truck and a utility at the Peak Downs coal mine has been publicly identified as Thiess team member Andreas Loizou.

In a written statement, Thiess extended deepest sympathies to Mr Loizou’s family, loved ones, friends and colleagues.

“Our thoughts are also with the tight-knit Bowen Basin mining community and the mining industry more broadly,” the company said.

Police were called early yesterday to the crash, with one man declared deceased at the scene and another man transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Early information from Resources Safety and Health Queensland indicates Mr Loizou was a passenger in a light vehicle on the haul circuit when a collision occurred with a haul truck.

“Investigations are in their early stages, so details of how the incident occurred are still being confirmed,” the safety watchdog said.

Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dale Last said his thoughts were with the friends, workmates and family of those involved and the emergency services that attended.

“Everyone deserves to go to work and come home safely,” he said

This is the third fatal mine incident in Central Queensland in 2026. A 59-year-old Sunshine Coast man was killed at Coronado Global Resources’ Mammoth underground mine in January on the same day that another man was killed at a small-scale gold operation in the Nebo area.
