Yarrabee Mine

The Yarrabee coal mine is an open-cut coal operation located in the Bowen Basin of central Queensland, around 40km north-east of Blackwater.

The mine has been operating since 1994 and is owned and operated by Yancoal Australia.

Yarrabee extracts both pulverised coal injection (PCI) coal used in steelmaking and thermal coal used for power generation.

Mining is conducted using truck-and-shovel open-cut methods across several pits, with coal processed through on-site handling and preparation facilities before transport.

The operation has coal reserves of more than 180 million tonnes and an annual production capacity of around 3–3.2Mt.

Once mined and processed, the coal is transported by road about 37km to the Boonal joint-venture rail load-out, where it is loaded onto trains and railed to the Port of Gladstone for export to international markets, particularly steel producers in Asia.

The mine forms part of the broader Bowen Basin coal industry, one of the world’s most significant sources of metallurgical coal, and plays an important role in Queensland’s coal export supply chain.
