The Wilkie Creek Mine is an open-cut thermal coal operation located in Queensland’s Surat Basin, about 30km north-west of Dalby in the Western Downs region.
The Wilkie Creek open-cut coal mine is slated for a restart after attracting backing from Blackbird Capital.
Relaunched as Dalmore Resources, the operation aims to refurbish the on-site coal washplant in 2026, with mining to commence shortly afterwards.
The mine extracts thermal coal used primarily for electricity generation, with the coal transported by rail to the Port of Brisbane for export to markets such as Japan, Korea and Taiwan.
Coal mining at the site began in 1994, with the operation later acquired by Peabody Energy in 2002.
Over its early years of operation, the mine produced tens of millions of tonnes of coal before global coal price declines led to its closure in 2013–2014.
After several ownership changes and periods of care and maintenance, the site was acquired by New Wilkie Energy in 2021, which sought to restart production and revive the mine’s infrastructure.
New Wilkie Energy went into administration in December 2024 after briefly bringing the site back online.
