Walton coal project

The Walton Project is a proposed coal development located about 100km east of Emerald and 170km west of Rockhampton.

The project is owned by private company Magnetic South, which acquired the asset in 2022 after earlier development plans stalled under previous ownership.

Walton is planned as a small-scale open-cut coal mine targeting seams of pulverised coal injection (PCI) coal, a type of metallurgical coal used in blast furnaces during steel production.

Development studies have suggested the mine could produce around 1.5–1.6Mt of coal per year once fully operational.

Mining would likely be undertaken using conventional truck-and-shovel methods, with coal processed through a coal handling and preparation plant before transport.

Coal from the project would be transported via road to a nearby rail load-out on the Blackwater rail system before being railed to the Port of Gladstone.

Although the project has not yet entered construction, Magnetic South continues to evaluate development options and approvals.
