Vulcan mine is an open-cut metallurgical coal operation located about 30km north of Moranbah in Central Queensland.
The mine was operated by Vitrinite, an Australian coal producer focused on developing premium coking coal assets in the region.
Vitrinite Group collapsed into receivership as of February 22, 2026, placing its Bowen Basin coal assets up for sale.
Vulcan targets coal from the German Creek coal measures, a geological formation known for producing high-quality hard coking coal used in the manufacture of steel.
Mining was carried out using conventional open-cut truck-and-shovel methods, with coal extracted from relatively shallow seams before being processed and prepared for export.
The mine forms part of the broader Vulcan coal complex, which includes nearby deposits such as Vulcan South and Callan.
These projects are designed to support long-term metallurgical coal production in the northern Bowen Basin.
Once mined and processed, coal from the Vulcan operation is transported via the regional rail network to export terminals on the Queensland coast, typically through the Hay Point and Dalrymple Bay coal terminals near Mackay.
