The Valeria Project is a proposed large-scale coal mining development located about 27km north-west of Emerald in the Central Highlands.
The project was proposed by Valeria Coal Holdings, a subsidiary of Glencore, and was designed as a major greenfield open-cut coal mine targeting both metallurgical coal for steelmaking and thermal coal for power generation.
In 2022, Glencore withdrew the project from the approvals process and placed it under review, citing global market uncertainty and corporate climate commitments.
Development plans outlined a conventional truck-and-shovel open-pit mining operation, with supporting infrastructure including a coal handling and preparation plant, rail loop and train load-out facility, access roads, water supply pipelines and worker accommodation.
The project was expected to produce up to 16 million tonnes of saleable coal per year over an estimated mine life of about 35–37 years, with coal transported via rail to export terminals on the Queensland coast.
Valeria represented a significant potential investment of around $1–1.5 billion and was projected to support around 1400 construction jobs and more than 1200 operational roles if developed.
