The Thalanga Mine is a mothballed polymetallic base-metal operation located about 60–65km south-west of Charters Towers within the Mount Windsor Volcanic Belt, a region known for volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) deposits.

The mine produced concentrates containing zinc, copper and lead, with additional gold and silver by-products.

The Department of Natural Resources is actively managing Thalanga as an abandoned mine site under the Abandoned Mine Lands Program.

The deposit was first discovered in 1975, with mining commencing in 1989 through both open-pit and underground operations.

Early production continued until 1998, after which the site was placed on care and maintenance before later ownership changes and redevelopment studies.

The modern operation was revived after Red River Resources acquired the project in 2014 and restarted mining and processing in 2017, producing separate concentrates of zinc, copper and lead for sale to international smelters.

Operations were suspended in 2022 after the site entered administration. The site was disclaimed by liquidators in December 2022 after a fall of ground in the Far West underground and other operational and compliance issues.
