The South Walker Creek Mine is an open-cut metallurgical coal operation located about 35km west of Nebo and about 100km north-west of Mackay.

South Walker Creek was acquired by Stanmore in 2022 from the BHP-Mitsui partnership and mines up to 7Mtpa of high-quality, low-volatile Pulverised Coal for Injection (PCI).

Operations are conducted using conventional open-cut truck-and-shovel mining methods, targeting coal seams within the Permian-aged Bowen Basin coal measures.

The site includes a coal handling and preparation plant that processes raw coal into export-quality product.

Once processed, the coal is transported via the Goonyella rail system to export terminals at Hay Point and Dalrymple Bay near Mackay, where it is shipped to steel producers around the world, particularly in Asia.

South Walker Creek supports a large workforce along with associated contractors and regional supply chains.

Mining at South Walker Creek began in 1970, making it one of the longer-running operations in the Bowen Basin.

The mine remains an important contributor to Queensland’s metallurgical coal exports and the Bowen Basin’s long-established coal industry.
