The South Johnstone Project is a proposed bauxite mining development located 10km south-west of Innisfail in Far North Queensland.

The project had been advanced by Queensland Bauxite, which was delisted in March 2024.

The project targeted gibbsite-rich bauxite, a form of ore suitable for refining into alumina, the intermediate product used to produce aluminium.

Geological studies have identified widespread bauxite mineralisation across the project area, with exploration targets estimated at between roughly 193Mt and 405Mt of bauxite, highlighting the potential for a long-term mining operation.

Development plans focused on producing direct shipping ore (DSO), allowing mined bauxite to be exported with minimal processing.

The project benefits from nearby infrastructure, including rail lines running through the project area and proximity to deep-water export ports, which could support future transport and export logistics.

Environmental studies and feasibility work have been undertaken to support regulatory approvals, including applications for a mineral development licence and a future mining lease.
