The South Galilee Project is a proposed large-scale coal development located in the Galilee Basin about 12km south-west of the town of Alpha and roughly 170km west of Emerald.

The project is being advanced by AMCI (Alpha) Pty Ltd, part of the international AMCI Group.

The development has been designed as a combined open-cut and underground coal mining operation targeting thermal coal resources within the Galilee Basin.

At full production, the project is planned to produce up to about 17Mt of saleable coal per year for export to international energy markets. Over its projected 35-year mine life, the operation could produce hundreds of millions of tonnes of coal.

Key infrastructure proposed for the project includes a coal handling and preparation plant, mine water management systems, on-site accommodation village and a rail spur connecting the mine to Queensland’s rail network for transport to export terminals, most likely Abbot Point on the North Queensland coast.

The project received environmental approvals but has not yet been developed, largely due to market conditions and the need for major supporting infrastructure in the remote Galilee Basin.
