The Sconi Project is a proposed nickel-cobalt-scandium mining and processing development located near Greenvale, about 220km north-west of Townsville.
The project is owned by Australian Mines through its subsidiary Sconi Mining Operations and is considered one of Australia’s most advanced critical-minerals projects aimed at supplying materials for the electric-vehicle battery industry.
Sconi is planned as a conventional open-pit mining operation targeting laterite-hosted deposits formed from weathered ultramafic rocks rich in nickel and cobalt.
The project comprises three main deposits—Greenvale, Lucknow and Kokomo—which together host significant reserves of nickel, cobalt and scandium.
Development plans include mining and processing around two million tonnes of ore per year through a hydrometallurgical processing plant to produce battery-grade nickel sulphate and cobalt sulphate, as well as smaller quantities of scandium oxide.
These materials are widely used in lithium-ion batteries and advanced alloys.
The project has an expected mine life of around 30 years and requires an investment of roughly A$1–1.4 billion, with construction and operations potentially supporting hundreds of jobs in North Queensland.
