The Rolleston Mine is a large open-cut coal operation located about 16km west of the town of Rolleston in Central Queensland.

The mine is operated by Glencore in a joint venture with Itochu Corporation and Sumitomo Corporation, and is one of the region’s key producers of export thermal coal.

Mining at Rolleston began in 2005, with the operation developed as a large-scale truck-and-shovel open-cut mine targeting thermal coal used for electricity generation.

The mine exploits multiple coal seams within the Permian-aged Bowen Basin, with coal extracted, crushed and processed through an on-site coal handling and preparation plant to meet export specifications.

The operation has a production capacity of around 12–19Mt of saleable coal per year, making it one of the larger thermal coal mines in Queensland.

Once processed, coal is transported via the Blackwater rail system to the Port of Gladstone, where it is exported to international markets, particularly in Asia.

Rolleston supports a significant workforce and regional supply chain, contributing to the Central Highlands economy.

As a long-life asset with ongoing expansion and optimisation programs, the mine continues to play an important role in Queensland’s export coal industry.
