The Red Hill project is a proposed underground coal development located about 20km north of Moranbah in Central Queensland.

The project is being advanced by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), a joint venture between BHP and Mitsubishi Corporation, and is designed to expand BMA’s existing coal mining operations in the region.

The project centres on the development of a new underground longwall mine targeting high-quality metallurgical (coking) coal, which is primarily used in global steel production.

Planned output has been estimated at up to 14Mtpa, making it a significant potential addition to Queensland’s export coal capacity.

In addition to the new underground operation, the project includes extensions to the Broadmeadow underground mine and incremental expansion of the nearby Goonyella Riverside open-cut mine, allowing for integrated use of existing infrastructure such as coal handling, processing and rail systems.

The Red Hill Project received environmental approvals in the mid-2010s; however, development has been delayed due to market conditions and investment timing.
