The Queensland Nickel Refinery is a mothballed nickel and cobalt processing facility located at Yabulu, about 25 km north-west of Townsville in North Queensland.

The refinery has undergone several ownership changes, most notably being operated by Queensland Nickel, formerly owned by businessman Clive Palmer.

In 2016, the operation entered liquidation following financial difficulties, resulting in significant job losses and the suspension of production.

The refinery was commissioned in 1974 and has historically processed laterite nickel ore into refined nickel and cobalt products for export to global markets.

The operation used a hydrometallurgical process, including high-pressure acid leaching and refining circuits, to extract nickel and cobalt from imported and domestic ore.

At full capacity, the refinery was capable of producing around 30,000 tonnes of nickel and several thousand tonnes of cobalt annually, supplying materials used in stainless steel, batteries and industrial applications.

The refinery has been subject to ongoing efforts to restart operations under new ownership structures.

It is currently associated with Nickel Industries, which has proposed redevelopment and recommissioning plans.
