The Parkhurst Magnesia Plant is a specialist magnesium oxide (magnesia) production facility located at Parkhurst, about 10 km north of Rockhampton.

The plant is operated by Queensland Magnesia (QMAG), a subsidiary of Refratechnik Group, and is part of an integrated operation that includes magnesite mining at Kunwarara and Triple Four.

Commissioned in the late 1980s, the facility processes cryptocrystalline magnesite ore into high-quality magnesia products using calcination and refining processes.

The plant produces a range of magnesia grades, including dead-burned magnesia (DBM) and caustic-calcined magnesia (CCM), which are used in industries such as refractories, steelmaking, agriculture, environmental treatment and construction materials.

Ore is transported from nearby mines to the Parkhurst plant, where it is crushed, beneficiated and processed in kilns to achieve the required chemical and physical properties.

The operation has an annual production capacity of several hundred thousand tonnes of magnesia products, much of which is exported to international markets.

As one of Australia’s key magnesia producers, the Parkhurst plant plays an important role in central Queensland’s industrial sector and in supplying high-purity magnesia to global markets.
