The Oaky North Mine is an underground coal operation located about 35km north of Tieri and near the town of Middlemount in Central Queensland.
The mine is operated by Glencore and forms part of the broader Oaky Creek mining complex, which also includes the nearby Oaky Creek No.1 underground mine.
Oaky North produces high-quality metallurgical (coking) coal, primarily used in the production of steel.
Mining is conducted using underground longwall methods, where large panels of coal are extracted in a continuous operation supported by hydraulic roof supports.
The coal is transported to the surface and processed through a coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP) to meet export specifications.
The mine has a production capacity of around 5–6Mt of saleable coal per year, contributing significantly to Glencore’s coal output in the Bowen Basin.
Once processed, coal is transported via the Goonyella rail network to export terminals at Dalrymple Bay and Hay Point, supplying steelmakers in Asia and other global markets.
