Mourilyan Sands Operation

This heavy mineral sands development is located about 15–20km south of Innisfail near the coastal community of Mourilyan.

It is owned by a private company Silica Resources Australia (SRA).

The project targets heavy mineral sands within coastal dune systems, containing valuable minerals such as zircon, rutile and ilmenite, which are widely used in ceramics, pigments, titanium production and advanced manufacturing.

The deposit is shallow and laterally extensive, making it suitable for open-cut strip mining methods.

Development plans involve excavating mineralised sands and processing them through a wet concentration plant using gravity separation (spirals) to produce a heavy mineral concentrate.

The remaining sand would be returned to mined areas to support progressive rehabilitation.

The project is expected to be small to medium in scale, with a relatively short mine life depending on resource size and production rates.

Proximity to infrastructure, including roads and the Port of Mourilyan, provides a potential pathway for exporting mineral products.
