The Mount Morgan Project is a gold-copper reprocessing and rehabilitation development located at the old Mount Morgan Mine, about 30km south-west of Rockhampton in Central Queensland.

The project is being advanced by Heritage Minerals, with support from government funding bodies, and is focused on reprocessing legacy tailings from one of Australia’s most historically significant gold mines.

The project involves constructing a tailings processing plant capable of treating around 2Mt of historic tailings per year, recovering valuable metals including gold and copper using modern extraction technologies.

Feasibility studies suggest potential annual production of around 60,000oz of gold and 5,000t of copper, highlighting the economic value remaining in previously processed material.

A key objective of the project is environmental remediation, addressing long-standing issues such as acid mine drainage and contaminated water impacting the Dee River.

By reprocessing tailings and improving water management, the project aims to reduce environmental risks while rehabilitating the mine site.

The project is also forecast to generate hundreds of construction and permanent jobs during its operational life (expected to be more than six years), while delivering significant economic and environmental benefits to the Rockhampton region.
