The Mount Coolon Mine (often referred to as the Mount Coolon goldfield) is a historic gold mining operation located about 200km west of Mackay within the Drummond Basin, considered one of the state’s most prospective gold regions.

Gold was first discovered at Mount Coolon in 1913, triggering a short-lived gold rush and the rapid development of underground mining operations and processing facilities in the area.

The mine and surrounding field became one of Queensland’s most productive gold districts during the early 20th century, with production peaking in the 1930s, when it was reportedly among the state’s leading gold producers.

Over its operational life, the mine produced approximately 197,000oz of gold and significant silver by-products before declining operations led to closure in 1939–1941.

Mining at Mount Coolon involved underground extraction of high-grade gold from quartz veins, supported by on-site crushing and cyanide processing plants.

Today, the area forms part of the broader Mount Coolon Gold Project, where modern exploration has identified additional resources and targets within a large epithermal gold system.

While no longer in production, Mount Coolon remains an important historic mining district with ongoing exploration potential.
