The Moranbah South Project is a proposed underground coal development located more than 3km south-east of Moranbah and about 150km south-west of Mackay.
The project is a 50:50 joint venture between Anglo American and Exxaro Resources, two major international mining companies.
The project is designed as a longwall underground mine targeting the Goonyella Middle coal seam, which is known for producing high-quality hard coking coal used in global steelmaking.
At full capacity, Moranbah South is expected to produce up to 18 million tonnes of coal per year, making it one of the larger undeveloped metallurgical coal projects in the Bowen Basin.
The development would utilise underground mining infrastructure, including access declines, ventilation systems and coal handling facilities, with coal likely processed using nearby infrastructure before being transported via the Goonyella rail network to export terminals such as Hay Point.
Although the project has progressed through environmental assessment and feasibility studies, it remains undeveloped, with ongoing evaluation influenced by market conditions, ownership strategies and long-term investment decisions.
