Moranbah North Mine

The Moranbah North Mine is an underground coal operation located about 18km north of Moranbah in Central Queensland. The mine is operated by Anglo American, which holds an 88% interest, with the remaining share owned by joint venture partners.
The operation began production in 1998. It is an underground mine, extracting coal from the Goonyella Middle Seam at depths of about 200m below the surface. The mine produces high-quality metallurgical (coking) coal, which is primarily exported to steelmakers in countries including Japan, Korea, India and across Europe.
Moranbah North has an annual production capacity of about 8 million tonnes of coal, supported by significant reserves estimated at over 260 million tonnes, making it one of the larger underground coal operations in the Bowen Basin.
Coal is transported via the Goonyella rail network to export terminals such as Hay Point, where it is shipped to international markets.
The mine also utilises methane gas capture systems, with gas extracted during mining used to generate power for onsite operations. As a long-established underground mine, Moranbah North plays a key role in Queensland’s metallurgical coal industry and global steel supply chain.
