The Minyango Project is a proposed underground coal development located about 10km south of Blackwater and about 170km west of Rockhampton. It is proposed as a greenfield multi-seam underground mine, targeting both metallurgical (coking) and thermal coal for export markets.
Development plans have outlined production of up to 6–9 million tonnes of run-of-mine coal per year, using a combination of longwall and bord-and-pillar mining methods to extract coal from seams within the Rangal Coal Measures. The mine was also expected to include surface infrastructure such as a coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP) and a rail load-out facility for transport to export terminals at the Port of Gladstone.
The project has undergone several ownership changes, originally led by Caledon Resources (via Blackwater Coal) and later associated with Bounty Mining and QCoal. Despite progressing through environmental assessment and planning, development has been delayed and the project remains undeveloped.
