Meteor Downs South Mine

The Meteor Downs South Mine is an open-cut thermal coal operation located about 25km west of Rolleston and about 45km south-east of Springsure. The mine operates within Mining Lease ML 70452 and forms part of a significant coal-producing region that supplies both domestic and export energy markets.

The project is operated by Sojitz MDS Mining on behalf of a 50:50 joint venture between Sojitz Blue and Endocoal (a subsidiary of U&D Mining). Mining began in 2018, transforming the project from an exploration asset into a producing thermal coal mine.

Meteor Downs South extracts low-ash, low-sulphur thermal coal using conventional open-pit mining techniques, including truck-and-shovel operations to remove overburden and recover coal from shallow seams. One advantage of the deposit is that the coal can often be shipped without extensive washing, reducing processing costs.

The mine has a production capacity of roughly 1.5 million tonnes of saleable coal per year and employs several dozen workers from surrounding regional communities. Coal from the operation is transported via regional rail infrastructure to export facilities at the Port of Gladstone, where it is shipped to international power generation markets.

Meteor Downs South represents a smaller but strategically located thermal coal operation within Queensland’s broader coal export industry.
