The Merlin Project is a high-grade molybdenum–rhenium deposit located in the Cloncurry region of North-West Queensland. The project is owned by Chinova Resources and forms part of a cluster of mineral assets near the Starra and Mount Dore deposits.

Merlin is regarded as one of the richest molybdenum deposits discovered globally, containing significant concentrations of molybdenum and the rare metal rhenium, both of which are important in high-strength alloys, aerospace components and advanced industrial applications. Current resource estimates outline approximately 6.7 million tonnes grading about 1.4 per cent molybdenum and 32 ppm rhenium, with additional inferred resources defined through drilling.

Development of the project progressed to feasibility study stage in 2014, and about 3.5 km of underground decline access was constructed in preparation for mining. However, a sharp drop in global molybdenum prices led to the operation being placed on care and maintenance before production commenced.

The project benefits from existing infrastructure and proximity to other Chinova operations, allowing potential shared processing and transport facilities. Exploration drilling and technical studies continue to evaluate opportunities to restart underground mining should market conditions improve.
