The Burton Mine Complex is a metallurgical coal mining development located about 120–160 km west of Mackay and near the regional mining centre of Moranbah.

Private mining company Argo QLD reached an agreement with the administrators of Bowen Coking Coal early this year to acquire the business.

The Burton operation originally commenced production in 1995 as a large open-cut coal mine targeting high-quality hard coking coal used in steelmaking. The deposit contains significant coal reserves and historically produced several million tonnes of coal annually using conventional open-pit mining methods such as truck-and-shovel extraction.

The Lenton project, sometimes referred to as New Lenton, represents a planned extension within the same mining district. It is designed to supply additional coal resources to the Burton processing infrastructure as part of a “hub-and-spoke” development model where multiple satellite pits feed a central coal handling and preparation plant.

Coal from the Burton–Lenton area is processed through the Burton complex before being transported by rail through the Bowen Basin export network to ports on Queensland’s east coast for shipment to international steel producers.
