Lake Vermont Mine

The Lake Vermont Mine is a large open-cut metallurgical coal operation located about 18–20 km north-east of Dysart in Central Queensland. The mine is owned by the Lake Vermont Joint Venture, in which Jellinbah Group holds a 70 per cent interest, with the remaining shares held by Marubeni, Sojitz and AMCI.

Mining at Lake Vermont focuses on producing hard coking coal and pulverised coal injection (PCI) coal, both of which are used in steelmaking. The operation is carried out using conventional open-cut methods, including drilling, blasting and large truck-and-shovel fleets to remove overburden and extract coal seams from the Bowen Basin’s Permian coal measures.

The mine shipped its first coal in 2009, and production capacity has since expanded to around 9 million tonnes of coal per year. Mining services are provided by Thiess, which has operated the site since its development.

Coal from Lake Vermont is processed through an on-site coal handling and preparation plant before being transported by rail to export terminals at Gladstone and Abbot Point for shipment to international steel producers.

The mine is a key component of Jellinbah Group’s Bowen Basin operations and contributes significantly to Queensland’s metallurgical coal export industry.
