The Kogan Creek Mine is an open-cut thermal coal operation located in the Surat Basin of southern Queensland, about 15km south of the township of Brigalow and near Chinchilla on the Western Downs. The mine is owned by CS Energy and supplies coal directly to the adjacent Kogan Creek Power Station, one of Australia’s largest single-unit coal-fired power plants.

Mining at Kogan Creek began in the mid-2000s and is carried out using conventional open-cut methods, including drilling, blasting and truck-and-shovel extraction of coal seams. The deposit occurs within the Walloon Coal Measures of the Surat Basin and includes several shallow coal seams with a combined thickness of roughly 10–12m.

Unlike many Queensland coal mines that export their product overseas, coal from Kogan Creek is transported via a 4km overland conveyor directly to the nearby power station. The mine produces around 2.5 million tonnes of coal annually to fuel the 750-megawatt plant, which generates baseload electricity for the National Electricity Market.

The operation employs a relatively small workforce and plays an important role in supporting electricity generation and energy security in Queensland.
