The Kevin’s Corner Project is a proposal for a large-scale thermal coal development located about 160km west of Emerald and north-west of the township of Alpha in Queensland’s Galillee Basin. Hancock Galilee was advancing the project some years ago alongside the Alpha Coal Project.

Kevin’s Corner hosts a very large coal resource, with estimates indicating about 4.2 billion tonnes of thermal coal, including several hundred million tonnes of reserves. The deposit is contained within Late Permian coal seams that dip gently across the mining lease area.

Development plans proposed a combined mining operation consisting of two open-cut pits and three underground longwall mines, supported by a coal handling and preparation plant and associated infrastructure. At full capacity the project could produce up to 30 million tonnes of thermal coal per year over an estimated 30-year mine life.

Coal from the project would be transported via a proposed rail link to export facilities at Abbot Point near Bowen. Although environmental approvals were granted in 2013, the project has experienced long delays and remains undeveloped, largely due to market conditions and infrastructure requirements.
