The Karin Basin Project is a proposed metallurgical coal development located near Clermont within the Bowen Basin, one of the world’s most important steelmaking coal regions. The project is owned by Australian coal company Vitrinite and focuses on developing a deposit of high-quality coking coal for global steel markets.

Exploration drilling at the site has identified an estimated 123 million tonnes of metallurgical coal resources, with some seams reported to be unusually thick and containing high-fluidity coking coal prized by steel producers. The deposit lies on the western edge of the Bowen Basin, an area traditionally associated with thermal coal, making the discovery of premium metallurgical coal particularly significant.

Development plans have considered a mine capable of producing about 1.4 million tonnes of coal per year, using a combination of surface and underground mining methods. Coal from the project would likely be transported via the regional rail network to export terminals such as Hay Point for shipment to international markets.

Although still in the exploration and planning stage, the Karin Basin Project is regarded as a promising source of high-quality coking coal in central Queensland.
