The Isaac River Project is a proposed metallurgical coal development located in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, about 28km east of Moranbah in Central Queensland. The project is owned by Argo QLD following the collapse of Bowen Coking Coal. It targets high-quality hard coking coal used primarily in steelmaking.

The project hosts an estimated 8.7 million tonnes of coal resources and is designed as a relatively small-scale operation compared with other Bowen Basin mines. Development plans focus on open-cut and highwall mining methods to extract coal from shallow seams within the basin’s Permian coal measures.

Once operational, the mine is expected to produce around 500,000 tonnes of metallurgical coal per year over an estimated five-year mine life. The coal would be transported using existing regional infrastructure, including rail networks that connect Bowen Basin mines to export terminals on Queensland’s east coast.

The Isaac River Project has received key environmental approvals but remains a relatively short-life development.
