The Ironbark No. 1 Mine is an underground metallurgical coal operation located in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, approximately around 30km north-east of Moranbah in Central Queensland.

The mine is privately owned by Argo Natural Resources and was developed as a new longwall mining project within one of the world’s most important coking coal regions.

The operation targets hard coking coal contained within the Permian-aged Rangal Coal Measures. Mining is conducted using longwall methods, where a mechanised shearer extracts coal from a continuous seam while hydraulic roof supports maintain stability in the underground workings.

Construction of the mine began in early 2022, with first coal produced later that year and the first longwall coal achieved in 2023. At full capacity the mine is expected to produce up to around 6 million tonnes of run-of-mine coal annually and operate for roughly 20–25 years.

Coal from Ironbark No. 1 is processed at the nearby Carborough Downs coal handling and preparation plant before being transported by rail to the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal for export to global steel producers.
