The Great Australia Mine is part of True North Copper’s Cloncurry Copper Project. The historic copper mining operation, located about 15km north of Cloncurry in North-West Queensland, is not currently in production.
Copper mineralisation at the site occurs within iron-rich rocks associated with hydrothermal alteration systems typical of the Cloncurry district. Mining at Great Australia has been carried out using open-cut methods, with ore extracted from shallow deposits and processed to produce copper concentrate.
The mine has operated intermittently since the early twentieth century, with various companies redeveloping the site as copper prices and exploration technologies evolved. In recent decades the operation has been associated with the nearby Rocklands copper project, where ore from Great Australia has been transported for processing.
