Goonyella Riverside Mine

The Goonyella Riverside Mine is a major metallurgical coal operation located about 30km north of Moranbah in Central Queensland. The mine is operated by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) and forms part of one of the largest coal mining complexes in Australia.

Goonyella Riverside produces high-quality hard coking coal used primarily in steelmaking. Mining is conducted using large-scale open-cut methods, including draglines, excavators and haul trucks to remove overburden and extract coal seams within the Permian coal measures of the Bowen Basin.

Coal from the operation is processed through the Goonyella Riverside coal handling and preparation plant, one of the largest coal processing facilities in the region. The processed coal is then transported via the Goonyella rail system to export terminals at the Port of Hay Point near Mackay.
