The George Fisher Mine is a large underground lead, zinc and silver operation located about 20km north of Mount Isa in North-West Queensland. The mine is owned and operated by Glencore and forms a key part of the company’s Mount Isa Mines complex.

The deposit was discovered in 1969 and was initially developed as an open-cut operation before transitioning to underground mining in the 1990s as deeper ore zones were accessed. Today, George Fisher is mined using large-scale underground methods, including long-hole open stoping, to extract sulphide ore hosted in Proterozoic sedimentary rocks within the Mount Isa mineral district.

Ore from the mine is transported to processing facilities at Mount Isa Mines, where it is milled and processed to produce zinc and lead concentrates containing silver. These concentrates are then transported by rail to the Port of Townsville for shipment to international smelters.

George Fisher is one of Australia’s largest zinc-lead deposits and remains an important contributor to Queensland’s base-metal mining industry.
