This silica sand project is located near Cape Bedford, about 20km east of Hope Vale and roughly 20km north of Cooktown on Cape York Peninsula. The project is being advanced by Diatreme Resources in partnership with global industrial minerals company Sibelco.

Galalar hosts extensive high-purity silica sand deposits within coastal dune systems that form part of the Cape Flattery–Cape Bedford sandfield, an area known for producing some of the world’s highest quality silica sands. The resource contains tens of millions of tonnes of silica with very high purity, often exceeding 98–99 per cent silicon dioxide, making it suitable for glass manufacturing and solar panel production.

Development plans involve a shallow open-cut mining operation using dry mining techniques, followed by on-site washing and gravity separation to produce a high-grade silica product. Processed sand would be transported by truck to a coastal barge loading facility and shipped to overseas markets.

Although the project has completed feasibility studies and resource estimates, development has been paused while the company prioritises nearby silica projects. Galalar remains a key long-term asset with potential to supply high-purity silica to global technology and renewable energy industries.
