The Foxleigh Mine is an open-cut metallurgical coal operation located about 15km south-west of Middlemount in Queensland’s Bowen Basin. The mine produces pulverised coal injection (PCI) coal, which is used in blast furnaces during steelmaking as a partial substitute for coke.
Mining at Foxleigh is carried out using conventional open-cut methods, including drilling and blasting followed by truck-and-shovel extraction of coal seams. The coal is processed at an on-site coal handling and preparation plant to meet export specifications.
Coal from the mine is transported by rail via the Goonyella rail system to export terminals at the Port of Dalrymple Bay near Mackay.
QMetco acquired the Foxleigh Mine in August 2016 via its 100 per cent ownership of Middlemount South, which operates Foxleigh on behalf of the Foxleigh Coal Joint Venture.
Joint venture partners are POSCO Australia (20 per cent) and Nippon Steel Australia (10 per cent).
Since commencing operations in 1999, Foxleigh has been recognised for producing high-quality PCI coal and remains an important contributor to Queensland’s metallurgical coal export industry.
