The Wilton Mine is an open-cut metallurgical coal operation located in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, approximately 45–50km north-east of Emerald in Central Queensland. The project is owned and operated by Futura Resources and forms part of the company’s broader Wilton–Fairhill coal development in the region.
Wilton targets high-quality hard coking coal used in the production of steel. The deposit consists of near-surface coal seams that allow mining to be carried out using conventional open-cut methods such as drilling, blasting and truck-and-shovel extraction.
Coal from the mine is processed through the nearby Gregory-Crinum coal handling and preparation facilities before being transported by rail to export terminals at the Port of Gladstone.
Futura Resources commenced mining at Wilton in 2024, making it one of Queensland’s newest coal producers. The operation has an approved production capacity of around 1.6 million tonnes of run-of-mine coal per year and is expected to supply international steelmaking markets.
The project forms part of a large resource base in the Bowen Basin and is intended to support long-term metallurgical coal production in central Queensland.
