The Ensham Mine is a large thermal coal operation located in Central Queensland, about 40km east of Emerald within the Bowen Basin. The mine produces thermal coal primarily used for electricity generation in international energy markets.
Extracted coal is processed at an on-site coal handling and preparation plant to meet export specifications.
Coal from the mine is transported by rail along the Blackwater rail system to export terminals at the Port of Gladstone. The operation is owned by Thungela Australia.
Production at Ensham began in the mid-1990s and the mine has expanded over time with additional pits developed across the lease area. The operation remains an important contributor to Queensland’s thermal coal export industry and supports employment in the Emerald region.
