The Eagle Downs Project is a proposed underground metallurgical coal development located about 20–25km south-east of Moranbah. The project targets high-quality hard coking coal used in steelmaking and lies within one of the world’s most productive metallurgical coal regions.
Originally developed as a joint venture between subsidiaries of Vale and Aquila Resources, the project has undergone several ownership changes. In 2024, Stanmore Resources acquired full ownership of the project after purchasing the remaining stakes from South32 and Aquila.
Development plans propose an underground longwall mining operation producing around 4.5 million tonnes of hard coking coal per year, with potential expansion to about 8 million tonnes annually if additional longwall panels are installed.
