Dawson Mine

The Dawson Mine is a large coal mining complex located about 10km south of the town of Moura in Central Queensland. Operated by Anglo American, the operation produces both metallurgical coal used in steelmaking and thermal coal used for electricity generation.

Mining at Dawson is conducted using conventional open-cut methods, including drilling and blasting followed by truck-and-shovel extraction of coal seams within the Bowen Basin’s Permian coal measures. The complex includes several open pits and associated infrastructure to support large-scale coal production.

Coal from the mine is processed through the Dawson coal handling and preparation plant before being transported via the Moura rail system to export terminals at the Port of Gladstone.

Dawson has been operating for several decades and forms part of Anglo American’s broader portfolio of metallurgical coal operations in Queensland. The mine is a significant employer in the Moura region and contributes to the state’s coal export industry.
