The Daunia mine is a large open-cut coal operation located about 30km south-east of Moranbah in Central Queensland. The mine produces hard coking coal used primarily in steelmaking and is one of the newer developments within the Bowen Basin.
Daunia is operated by Whitehaven Coal. Mining is carried out using conventional open-cut methods, including drilling and blasting followed by truck-and-shovel extraction of coal seams within the Bowen Basin’s Permian coal measures.
The mine commenced production in 2013. Daunia is a significant contributor to Queensland’s coking coal exports and supports employment and economic activity across the Moranbah region.
