The Commodore mine is an open-cut thermal coal operation located in southern Queensland, approximately 8km west of the town of Millmerran on the Darling Downs. The mine is operated by Yancoal Australia and supplies coal primarily to the adjacent Millmerran Power Station.
Mining at Commodore is carried out using conventional open-cut methods, including drilling and blasting followed by truck-and-shovel extraction of coal seams within the Surat Basin. The coal is relatively low in ash and suitable for electricity generation.
Unlike many Queensland coal operations that export coal overseas, production from the Commodore mine is dedicated almost entirely to domestic energy supply. Coal is transported directly to the nearby Millmerran power station via a short haulage route, providing a reliable fuel source for the plant.
The mine commenced operations in 2006 and was developed specifically to support long-term power generation at Millmerran. Commodore plays an important role in Queensland’s electricity supply by providing consistent fuel to one of the state’s major coal-fired power stations.
