The Comet Ridge Project is a proposed metallurgical coal development located about 60km east of Emerald and around 25km south of the township of Comet. The project targets coking coal resources within the region’s Permian coal measures, which are well known for producing high-quality coal used in steelmaking.
Exploration at the site has identified a JORC-compliant coal resource of roughly 57 million tonnes of shallow coal, much of it located less than 50m below the surface. This relatively shallow resource suggests the deposit could potentially be developed using open-cut mining methods.
The project has been associated with Bowen Coking Coal, which acquired the asset from Acacia Coal in 2017 as part of a broader portfolio of metallurgical coal exploration projects in the Bowen Basin. It was recently acquired by Argo QLD.
Despite early exploration and development concepts, the project has seen limited advancement in recent years and is generally regarded as an undeveloped or inactive coal resource. If developed in the future, Comet Ridge could supply coking coal to global steel producers via Queensland’s established rail and export infrastructure.
