The Clermont coal mine is a large open-cut thermal coal operation located in Central Queensland, abouty 12km north-west of the town of Clermont. The mine sits within the northern part of the Bowen Basin, one of Australia’s most significant coal-producing regions.

Clermont produces thermal coal used primarily for electricity generation in international markets. Mining is carried out using conventional open-cut methods, including drilling and blasting followed by truck-and-shovel extraction of coal seams. Extracted coal is processed at an on-site coal handling and preparation plant before being transported via rail.

Coal from the mine is hauled along the Blair Athol rail line and then connected to the broader Queensland rail network, allowing exports through the Port of Gladstone. The operation was originally developed by Rio Tinto and began production in 2010.

Clermont coal mine is currently operated by Glencore following its acquisition of Rio Tinto’s coal assets. The mine remains an important contributor to Queensland’s thermal coal export industry and provides employment across the Clermont region.
