The China Stone Project is a proposed large-scale thermal coal development located about 95km south-west of the town of Clermont. The project is owned by MacMines Austasia and is designed to produce thermal coal primarily for electricity generation.

The project area covers extensive coal deposits within the Permian-aged coal measures of the Galilee Basin. Development plans have proposed a combination of open-cut and underground mining methods, targeting multiple coal seams across a large tenement area.

At full development, the project has been proposed to produce up to 38 million tonnes of coal per year over several decades. Infrastructure plans include coal handling and preparation facilities, water management systems and a rail connection linking the mine to export terminals on Queensland’s east coast.

Although the project has received several regulatory approvals, development has not yet proceeded. The China Stone Project remains one of several large proposed coal developments in the Galilee Basin intended to supply thermal coal to international energy markets.
