The Carmichael mine is a large thermal coal operation located in Queensland’s Galilee Basin, about 160km north-west of Clermont in central Queensland. The mine is operated by Bravus Mining and Resources, a subsidiary of India’s Adani Group, and represents one of the most significant new coal developments in Australia in recent decades.

Carmichael is designed as a combined open-cut and underground mining operation targeting thermal coal used primarily for electricity generation. Mining involves conventional truck-and-shovel methods in open pits as well as underground extraction from deeper coal seams.

Coal from the mine is transported along the purpose-built Carmichael Rail Network, which connects the site to existing rail infrastructure and export terminals at the Port of Abbot Point (North Queensland Export Terminal) near Bowen.

Construction of the project began in 2019 following a lengthy approvals process and significant public debate. The mine has since commenced production and exports thermal coal to international markets, particularly in Asia, contributing to Queensland’s energy export sector.
