The Carborough Downs mine is an underground metallurgical coal operation located in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, about 25km south-east of Moranbah in Central Queensland. The mine produces hard coking coal used primarily in the production of steel and forms part of the region’s extensive metallurgical coal industry.

Mining at Carborough Downs is carried out using underground methods, historically including longwall and continuous miner techniques to extract coal from deep seams within the Permian coal measures. The coal is processed through an on-site coal handling and preparation plant before being transported via rail along the Goonyella rail system to export terminals at the Port of Hay Point near Mackay.

The mine has undergone several ownership changes since commencing production in the early 2000s and is currently operated by Fitzroy Australia Resources. Carborough Downs remains a significant contributor to Queensland’s metallurgical coal exports and supports employment and economic activity in the Moranbah region.
