Located about 220km north of Cairns on Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula, the Cape Flattery silica mine is one of the world’s largest and longest-operating silica sand mines.

Established in 1967, the mine is operated by Cape Flattery Silica Mines – a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation.

It produces exceptionally high-purity silica sand for export to customers across Asia, supplying industries including glass manufacturing, foundry products, chemicals and solar photovoltaic glass.

The operation integrates mining, processing, stockpiling and export through its own dedicated port facilities at Cape Flattery, enabling the shipment of more than three million tonnes of silica sand annually.

The mine employs more than 100 people and has operated continuously for nearly six decades, making it a significant contributor to the Far North Queensland economy.

The operation has developed extensive infrastructure, including processing plants, conveyors, stockpiles, accommodation and a private export terminal, while undertaking progressive rehabilitation of mined areas in partnership with Traditional Owners and Queensland regulators.
